How to have a Difficult Conversation:

Manage your underlying state going into the dialogue. Know that in order to influence someone, you need to be open to get influenced yourself.

Ask collaborative questions to build a shared purpose. This will help you focus on what is important to both parties.

Agree to a scenario where both parties’ needs are met. If needed, create an accountability plan of who does what by when and how it will be followed up.

Make your team self-leaders.By teaching them how to have difficult conversations.

At a very young age, I was given the responsibility to manage my parent’s busy restaurant in Melbourne.

It was there that I realised the importance of having difficult conversations with both my staff as well as our clients.

Ten years later, I’ve found one thing to be common among many different industries ranging from construction to digital agencies:

Your team’s performance is directly correlated with their ability to have difficult conversations with internal and external stakeholders.

Many organisations overlook this fact.

And it costs them significantly with lower productivity and staff retention.

Learning how to have difficult conversations in a safe manner, ensures you can build a high performance team culture based on trust and respect.
